The small garden

photo of a lush basil planting in a wooden kegThere isn't a good spot to grow vegetables at my place. I live in an apartment in a two-family house and have limited room to grow. Also, it is very shady around most of the house - except in the parking area. For several years I have not grown any vegetables.

Something new

I decided to try container gardening in at the edge of the sunny parking area. So, early this summer, Sandy and I went up to the garden center and bought three wooden half-barrels, a dozen bricks, and a huge bag of potting soil. Later, I purchased tomato plants, a few flowers, and a few packages of seeds and went to town! It was hard work for me filling the tubs with soil, but I did it and got the tomatoes planted. Tomato plants are in two of the tubs, half large tomatoes and half cherry tomatoes. They take a lot of water, but I can carry water to the area near the driveway.

The third large tub began the summer with a pair of geraniums covered with candy-pink blooms. I later moved them to make space for the roots of a bunch of basil I had bought at the co-op. potted vegetables on an old picnic table in bright sun I used most of the tops, then thought, what the heck, I'll just stick these roots in the wooden planter tub. And they grew beautifully! I've been picking tomatoes and basil every day.

In an assortment of flower pots I had around the place, I planted squash, beans and lettuce. The squash is obviously too crowded and underfed, though a few blossoms have appeared on them. The green bush beans have a chance, and in fact I harvested a small handful tonight, which I put in with some yellow beans from the Food Co-op. These pots I put on a picnic table I carried over to my planting area, and it accommodates the plants and some of my equipment.
